I was expecting a surge of heavy traffic on my websites as they landed on the first page of Google search engine result pages (SERPs). Heavy traffic means lots of revenue from contextual advertising. I was expecting revenue between three to four digits US dollars but unfortunately my web server gave up. The peak hour was still about to commence when my web server can’t handle it anymore resulting to more than eight hours of downtime on most of my websites.

Lesson learned: distribute websites expecting heavy surge of traffic on different web servers. This set-up reduces the likelihood of a web server failure. Another advantage of this set-up is that you don’t lose all your websites once a web server goes down. On the other hand, this set-up costs more BUT the potential earnings are way higher than the operating costs.

I’ve learned my lesson. Now, I’ve distributed my websites on different web servers. I’ve utilized all my accounts at DreamHost (johnnyblaze, greenlantern and rolls cluster), A Small Orange and RapidVPS to handle my websites. Woot!
